We have a table with about 2 billion rows. ( Yes - billion with a B ).

It also has a CLOB column which we want to DROP to reclaim space.

Being a production database, we have to ensure :

  • be able to restore the table back to how it was ( in case of problems )
  • minimize downtime

What would be best approach to drop the column ?

  • This is really the wrong forum for this question. Try dba.stackexchange.com. That said, do you mean to drop the column, or drop the data from the column?
