after each reboot array is degraded and /dev/sde is removed. I re-add /dev/sde using

mdadm /dev/md0 -a /dev/sde

array getting rebuilt everything seems OK.

Until the next reboot...

  • So if /dev/sde is getting removed is there maybe something wrong with that disk? What does SMART say ? Commented Jul 5, 2011 at 9:47

I had a similar problem with a RAID-1. In my case, because of device renaming, the solution was to remove the /dev devices from the ARRAY specification and only use the UUID.

Although there is nothing specific in the log, and providing that the array finished rebuilding before the reboot, then I suspect that the disk /dev/sde has something up with it, a good guide to look into this using SMART (if supported nby the disk) can be found at cyberciti.

If you happen to have another drive floating around that you can drop that in to test the configuration.

  • SMART is OK, i've double checked it.

  • Also, i notice in dmesg that in startup [ 2.622452] md: bind<sdc> [ 2.624170] md: bind<sdd> [ 2.625842] md: bind<sdb> while [ 169.429012] md: bind<sde>

  • Yes, i noticed the delay, that was the reason i was wondering if something was wrong with it. Is it possible for you to swap that disk out and rebuild the array with another?

  • I'm afraid not. I have concluded that there is no hardware problem Please see this output of mdadm --assemble -v --force /dev/md0 /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde in the original post
