I used the tutorial below to setup postfix and dovecot on a Digital Ocean server. But I'm getting "Connection Timed out" when postfix/smtp tries to deliver an email to a remote host like gmail or yahoo..

Outgoing SMTP on port 25 is blocked by default for all Digital Ocean users. You'll need to contact them if you want it unblocked.

  • Thanks Michael, I 've just asked them to open it. I forgot to check that since I used their own website tutorial to setup Postfix...I'll update this as soon as they answer me.

  • You're right. Digital Ocean opened port 25 after I asked for it.

  • This is also the case for Hetzner Cloud, you can request to unblock it after 1 month, more info here

Check your nameserver in /etc/resolv.conf, try Google's 8.8.8.8:

sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf

Change the nameserver IP:

nameserver 8.8.8.8

Then restart postfix:

sudo /etc/init.d/postfix restart
