I created 3 virtual interfaces with different mac addresses all linked to the same physical interface. I see that they successfully arp for the gw and they can ping (the request is coming in the packet capture in wireshark). However the ping utility does not count the responses. Does anyone knows the issue? I am running Ubuntu 14.04 in a VmWare.

I feel something is missing here. Per your title your virtual interfaces cannot ping the external gateway except the first one. But per your output in your comment eth0.1 and eth0.3 is able to ping the external gateway, while eth0.2 is should 100% packet loss. I would recommend looking at your routing table to see traffic patterns, "route -n".

Also what type of vmware project? workstation, player, esxi?
