I have set up an SSH server on a Windows Server 2012 r2 with cygwin. I can successfully connect to the server with ssh using Putty on my windows pc or using Ubuntu. However, when I try to connect to it with git bash, it close the connection before I have the chance to input my password.

This is the command I run in git bash: ssh [email protected] -vvv

And this is the output:

It looks like the ssh session sent over a public key (from Users/Mackan/.ssh/identity) and the server closed the connection after receiving that. Perhaps try moving the public keys somewhere else and try connecting again?

  • Hmm, since I haven't defined any public keys I expected to be asked for my password instead. What would change by moving my non-existing public-keys somewhere else?

  • Ok, now I deleted a private key that I had defined for my for my github account and now it magically works. Does SSH disconnect if a private key that doesn't match the public key is found. I had expect it to try the next authentication method, password in this case but it seems like that isn't the case.

Mismatched public and private keys is never going to end well. The point of them is to allow the establishment of a shared key, if your private key doesn't match the public key you're advertising the shared secret isn't going to be calculable. Oct 18, 2014 at 19:56
