I wanted to share knowledge of tuning FreeBSD via sysctl.conf / loader.conf / KENCONF / etc. It was initially based on Igor Sysoev's (author of nginx) presentation about FreeBSD tuning up to 100,000-200,000 active connections. Newer versions of FreeBSD can handle much much more.

Tunings are for FreeBSD7 - FreeBSD-CURRENT. Since 7.2 amd64 some of them are tuned well by default. Prior 7.0 some of them are boot only (set via /boot/loader.conf) or do not exist at all.

If you are tuning network for maximum performance you may wish to play with ifconfig options like:

In case you've enabled DDB in kernel config, you should edit your /etc/ddb.conf and add something like this to enable automatic reboot (and textdump as bonus):

And do not forget to add ddb_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf

Since FreeBSD 9 you can select to enable/disable flowcontrol on your NIC:

In FreeBSD-8+ netstat's -Q option appeared, try following command to display netisr stats

For solving non-trivial TCP problems one can use net.inet.tcp.log_debug, it produces dmesg output similar to:

NB!
Last but not the least: if you are into network tuning - it's good practice to buy the best network card you can afford. I personally prefer Intel's igb(4), list of models can be found in if_igb.c

This is definitely not something that you should copy/paste into your production configs! Some of provided "tunings" can be even harmful. Use provided data as reference for further investigation or A/B testing. I say it again just to be explicit: DO NOT BLINDLY APPLY "TUNINGS" YOU'VE FOUND ON INTERNET!.
Before applying any sysctl on production system you should investigate it's impact (it's essential to look in kernel's source code) and measure it's performance benefits(if any) in testing environment.

What tunings are you using on yours FreeBSD servers?

You can also post your /etc/sysctl.conf, /boot/loader.conf, kernel options, etc with description of its' meaning (do not copy-paste from sysctl -d). Don't forget to specify server type (frontend, backend, cache, db, storage, gateway, etc)

  • This is one of my favorite posts, but I'd really love to see more guidelines about when to adjust some of the various settings posted above. For example, the Shared memory entry towards the top of the sysctl.conf section: how do I know if I want to increase it? How far should I increase it? There are too many different entries here to simply do trial and error with each one. Thanks! May 20, 2012 at 1:17

    I've found blog posts and even mailing lists too misleading on most of those tunables. The best source of insight is still source code itself. From now on I'll try to give more information about parameters. Also this is CW, so anyone is free to edit it. May 21, 2012 at 12:37

I'd recommend against options IPFIREWALL_DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT. The default is to Default to Deny. The firewall comes up with just one rule deny ip from any to any and stays that way until a script configures exactly what traffic should get through.

Follow-Up Note: RSA (one of the world's leading security technology companies) was hacked recently when part of their firewall was disabled during a maintenance window. This really underscores how quickly a system can be compromised given the right conditions.

If you insist on disabling the firewall until you explicitly block unwanted traffic, please consider using the sysctl available by adding net.inet.ip.fw.default_to_accept=1 to loader.conf. This has the added benefit of being easily modified (no recompiling the kernel) if you change your mind at some point in the future.

    Yeah, but if you use Default to Accept then you're server is vulnerable while booting. This might be a rare occurrence, but ask any enterprise admin if it's OK for their servers to be 100% open for a couple minutes every now and then. You're likely to get a dirty look and a short answer. Using this option for development and testing of rules in a very controlled environment is one thing; but suggesting that it's a common practice for performance purposes is irresponsible.

  • Ok, your point is clear, I should've added some comments about IPFIREWALL_DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT. Let's try to fix it. Removed DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT, but added net.inet.ip.fw.default_to_accept with comments commented by default. Jul 27, 2010 at 13:02

i usually add followings to my /etc/sysctl.conf as well...

net.inet.tcp.blackhole=2
net.inet.udp.blackhole=1

and both of

security.bsd.see_other_uids=0
security.bsd.see_other_gids=0

while we're on tunning subject i'd also recommend to take a look here:

NGINX + PHP-FPM + APC = Awesome

From the default sysctl.conf, it provides "security" against script kiddies who manage to brute their way in on a non-root account. Doesn't hurt to have it enabled (in most cases, exceptions are non-privileged daemons needing to see the process list).
