I am the beginner in Ansible and I am trying to learn it. I use the ansible docs Getting Started and I am faced with the problem which stopped me. My problem relies on that when I've tried to use a command below:

sudo ansible all -m ping -vvvv

I got strange errors which, frankly speaking, I don't understand. I have tried to understand this message in google, but it was a pretty difficult task. The error is below.

[user@host ~]$ sudo ansible all -m ping -vvvv

You don't have a ssh key set. (debug1: Trying private key: /root/.ssh/id_rsa)

Try adding one to "/root/.ssh/id_rsa" and make sure the other server accepts it.

  • I think that is doesn't solve the problem...Strange issue.... Should I add something on side of my server which I've tried to connect ? Edit: I genearated ssh-key on an root account and in logs I can see that it found id_rsa

  • The solution was very simple as you wrote I needed to generate new key for root and on server side added public key to authorized_keys :) Thanks

  • Why do we need to involve keys in a pinging process. We don't actually do connect to the server in terminal before we ping. Now that having to have the public key on the node makes it tedious to boostrap a node Jul 2, 2015 at 10:40
  • I know this is old, but for others looking, an ansible ping is not "normal" ICMP ping. It actually connects via SSH so will always need keys in place. Feb 18, 2016 at 17:55
