I been using this forums for many years and this is the first time im in need to open a question, i search across the internet but i could not get an specific and clear answer, probaly because i dont know that much maybe.

My problem is the following, im setting up a DNS Cache Server, and im being asked to "set a public IP (that is conected to the internet to do the recursive queries) on my Loopback Interface/ip". The problem is that i never did that and i dont really understand why, i always thought that the Loopback ip was and ip/interface that calls itself, so i dont get how to set up an 200.xxx.xxx.xxx IP on it. The setup i did the first time was, a bond between 2 eth interfaces (they asked me for a round robin balancing) so, from the bond ip i reply all the cache store queries and for the recursive queries i made an alias to the bond. But the asked me for this, to put the public ip on the loopback, and i dont know why? and in the case of simply seting the 200.x.x.x ip insted of the 127.0.0.1 how to make that ip go throw the bond? maybe making another bond between the bond and loopback?

I hope i being clear enought. Sorry for probably all the bad things i say and concepts i have hahaha.

    If you don't understand the requirements, you need to talk to the person asking for it. There are some perfectly valid reasons to do this, one example is for a load balancing design called 'direct server return' (you wouldn't replace 127.0.0.1, you'd add another address). – yoonix May 20 '16 at 18:52
  • @yoonix Thanks, i bealive thats what i need, but my question now is: I have to set on my Cache server the query-source-pool, this mean to set the ip where all my recursive queries will go to the internet, but if i pointint to the ip of the loopback how will the traffic go out? Im missing the knowledge of how the traffic goes from the loopback? I have to do some bonding? thank you – Mauro Boffito May 26 '16 at 18:02
  • There is plenty of existing documentation available if you do a we bsearch for direct server return that should help you understand it. – yoonix May 26 '16 at 18:21
