Whenever I run sudo apache2 -S on my server it throws the following error:

I've tried several things but it keeps giving me these errors... I made some adjustments to apache2.conf but that ended up not working so I reverted my changes, tried downloading the default ennvardidn't work

My /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file looks like this:

What could be the problem, what am I missing?

I added this to my envvars file:

export APACHE_RUN_USER=www-data
export APACHE_RUN_GROUP=www-data

This fixed once error but now I still get these errors:

  • Greetings! Just suggestion - You have a problem with the first variable in the config. Maybe some syntax troubles here. Try to comment first directive # ServerRoot "/etc/apache2" and restart Apache2 sudo service apache2 restart. – Sergey Serov Mar 5 '18 at 14:36

  • Usually, Apache works without adding vars in the user environment. Do You have original config? If not - try to get from the archive from the official site and use it. It is good practice make a copy of original config file before changs: cp apache2.conf apache2.conf_orig – Sergey Serov Mar 5 '18 at 17:19
  • I reinstalled it multiple times and havent changed a thing in the config so it is the original config @SergeySerov – Levi Verkerk Mar 5 '18 at 23:41
  • journalctl -xe and systemctl status apache2.service will show You additional information for debugging. – Sergey Serov Mar 6 '18 at 13:30

Apache is complaining that the environment variables that are usually defined in /etc/apache2/envvars aren't defined. The startup script for apache2 runs that file if it's present, to set APACHE_LOCK_DIR and friends.

If your file in /etc/apache2 is really named envvar and not envvars, then that's your problem.

You can also set those variables in the start script as part of the users env. Same with Systemd.

    @LeviVerkerk This file /etc/init.d/apache2 must stay unchanged! :) sudo service apache2 start is ok, all changes only in configs here: /etc/apache2/* and make a copy of original configs for reverting in fault case. – Sergey Serov Mar 5 '18 at 18:32
