ping6 <address> works as expected.

mtr -6 <address> returns mtr: udp socket connect failed: Invalid argument

mtr -6 '<address>' returns mtr: udp socket connect failed: Invalid argument

mtr -6 [<address>] returns Failed to resolve host: [<address>]: Name or service not known

note that mtr's -a switch is used to set the source address, not the destination.

I guess your mtr isn't compiled with IPv6 support. Run mtr --help and see if it lists -6. Mine one does and works with v6 addresses just fine, both numerical and DNS.
