One of our employees recently came to me asking for help restoring a specific Google Doc he had stored in his company-provided Google Drive (example@examplecompany.com). They accidentally deleted it, and now they want it back. They came to me asking for help. Usually, we would be able to help in this scenario, if it wasn't for two things. 1. The document was accidentally deleted about 45 days ago. (Why they didn't come asking then is anyone's guess) 2. The Doc wasn't created by them, nor was it directly shared with them. (They found it through a view-only link.) We tried restoring the data anyways, but we didn't find it. Is there any way to find it?

Additional details: Their privileges were view-only. They found it through a link. The Doc didn't go to Trash. It simply disappeared.

P.S: If we had a backup solution(we currently don't), would this problem be fixed? This is not the first request like this we've had. We want something that works in the background, is invisible to users, and offers a reasonably long retention period. If anyone could reccomend a good one and/or tell me if a backup solution would take care of future instances like this, that would be great.

  • If it wasn't their document, and they had View Only permissions to the document, and the document was shared with them... then they didn't delete the document. – joeqwerty Aug 1 at 22:48
