I have another frustrating dilemma and it would be wonderful to have another pair of eyes on this (really any but mine..). I have built a wordpress site using sage/bedrock/trellis, and I was just about ready to push it to a brand new staging server, but alas. I get this error when I try to provision the remote server (even with the --ask-pass option... same error without the option as well)

$sudo ansible-playbook server.yml -e env=staging -u root --ask-pass -vvvv

This is the error that outputs when I run ansible ping

$ ansible staging -m ping -u root --ask-pass

SSH password:
159.65.244.133 | FAILED! => {
    "changed": false,
    "failed": true,
    "module_stderr": "Shared connection to 159.65.244.133 closed.\r\n",
    "module_stdout": "/bin/sh: 1: /usr/bin/python: not found\r\n",
    "msg": "MODULE FAILURE",
    "rc": 0
}

You may notice it complains about not finding /usr/bin/python, but that file /is / there :c

Let me know if there is any more detail I can provide. Thank you for your advice and assistance!

  • The first one is about the bad ssh key (you public key is not present on the server or you dont have the right private key, its basically the same). The second error is about the python interpreter, what you mean the file is there ? have you checked ansible requirements ? docs.ansible.com/ansible/latest/installation_guide/…

The first error is due to incorrect configuration of SSH keys. vx3r is right. You should get the same error if you try to connect to the server via SSH using a key without ansible.

For the purpose of the second error. Have you ever had a look at this post on Stackoverflow?

Your debug output shows a mismatch of usernames:

debug1: Control socket "/home/jill/.ansible/cp/4c119164e1" does not exist
[...]
debug1: identity file /root/.ssh/id_ed25519-cert type -1

I assume jill is your own username, and you configured the ssh connection with keys from that user.

Try running ansible-playbook without sudo. There is absolutely no need for it and that way it shouldn't try to use the ssh keys from the root user.

For the second error: ansible needs python to be installed on the target server. I suspect you only checked on your local machine for it. Install it on the server, then run ansible-playbook again (without sudo).

Everyone was right. Thanks for responding to my question so quickly.

To put it simply:

The SSH error I had created by trying to bypass ssh with by trying to use root user with a password.

The second error was a missing python package. The server in question had a package called "python3" and "python3.6", but not python. To resolve this I ran sudo apt-get install python, which installed "python."
