It has been in use by major Linux distributions for user-friendly printing services for about a decade and was purchased by Apple Inc in 2007 when it was purchased from Michael Sweet. CUPS was notable in providing a web-based administrative interface to the Linux printing system and was considered a vast improvement over the old lpadmin CLI tools of the time.
